It is a well-known and respected certification mark in Nepal that verifies the quality of an industrial product.
How Do I Register an NS Mark?
Nepal Standard (NS Mark) is registered for the products and services produced by industries under Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act, 2037 (1980), and Nepal Standard (NS Mark) Regulation, 2040.
Section 3 of the Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act, 2037 (1980) provides that the Government of Nepal may establish a Standards Council to make arrangements for determining standards in relation to any goods, process, or service and affixing marks thereon. The Council’s full name will be the Nepal Council of Standards, and its abbreviations will be N.C.S. The Nepal Council of Standards has the authority to set product and service standards in Nepal.
Nepal Council of Standards will conduct an investigation and establish a separate office in order to grant the Nepal Standard (NS Mark), as stated in Section 5 of the Nepal Standards (Certification Mark) Act, 2037. (1980).
The Government of Nepal shall establish an office, whose full English name shall be the Nepal Bureau of Standards, for the purpose of carrying out the objectives of this Act. Its abbreviations will be N.B.S.
Functions, responsibilities, and authority of the Nepal Council of Standards (N.C.S.)
The Nepal Council of Standards (N.C.S.) grants the Nepal Standard (NS Mark) and performs the following functions:
- To establish standards for any goods, processes, or services, as well as to amend or cancel previously established standards,
- To accept standards established by any local or foreign institution,
- To grant recognition to any governmental or non-governmental laboratory for the purpose of determining standards or tests, or to suspend or cancel previously granted recognition,
- To specify the design and form of the standard certificate and certification mark.
- To establish fees for certificates of standards, certification marks, and services.
- Nepal Bureau of Standards (N.B.S.)
- The Nepal Bureau of Standards (NBS) Its abbreviations will be N.B.S. It is the office tasked with granting the Standard Mark. The following are the functions and duties of the office.
- After the Nepal Council of Standards has prescribed standards, licenses for the use of certification marks or certificates of standards may be issued ( N.C.S. )
- Inspecting or arranging for inspection in connection with the promotion of the standard of any good, process, or service, and providing technical advice and directives. (c) Appointing or designating inspectors,
- Renewal, suspension, or cancellation of licenses
- To reach agreements outlining the conditions that must be met before issuing licenses.
- To carry out the Council’s administrative functions ( N.C.S. )
How do I register my NS Mark in Nepal?
Completing and submitting an application to the Nepal Bureau of Standards.
First and foremost, the NS mark must be registered in Nepal. Anyone who wishes to obtain the standard of any goods in any quantity must apply to the office.
Following the completion of registration, the Nepal Council of Standards (N.C.S.) office will conduct the necessary investigations and may certify whether or not the goods in such specific quantity are of standard quality.

The Nepal Bureau of Standards requires that products produced in industries be tested in a designated laboratory to ensure that they meet the standard (N.B.S.) By notification in the Nepal Gazette, the Government of Nepal may make it mandatory for the producer, manufacturer, distributor, or person providing services to adhere to the standards determined by the Nepal Council of Standards in the respect of products or procedures other than pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs whose standards are prescribed under the Drug Act, 2035 (1978) and the Food Act, 2023 (1966). Inspectors
Products made in industries are either standard or non-standard. The Nepal Council of Standards (N.C.S.) office may appoint or designate an appropriate number of inspectors to inspect the standard of any goods or process. The following are the functions, duties, and powers of the appointed or designated inspector:
- Determine whether a license has been obtained for any goods or processes on which a certification mark is used, and whether the license’s conditions are being met.
- To determine whether or not the conditions specified in the certificate of standard in relation to any goods or process in which it is used are met,
- To inspect the production of any goods bearing the certification mark or a certificate of standard, or any process relating to such goods,
- To receive samples of any goods on which the certification mark or certificate of standard is used, or of any raw or processed goods relating to such commodity, at any time for inspection or examination.
